Butterfly patterning and matching activity

Butterfly sort

Continue the pattern

I just picked up these colourful, paper butterflies from the dollar store. The obvious thing to do with them is glue them on paper as a craft, but I like to expand materials  and always use things to teach concepts while the children are having fun:

  • use the butterflies to sort by size and colour. Put some various colour and sized butterflies in a egg carton half and have the ¬†children sort through the pile to match them.
  • make a pattern with 2 or 3 butterflies for younger children and more for older ones. Glue the pattern on a piece of paper and the children have to continue it over and over a few times
  • teach the children about big and small, smallest to biggest by ordering the piles accordingly.
