I was looking for materials around the room to use at quiet time, and I gathered up some different colored pipe cleaners and some plastic sewing mats. You can find these mats at your local dollar store or crafts supply store. They are usually used with plastic needles and yarn for teaching kids to sew.
The children ended up using them to make 3-d sculptures, and weaving the pipe cleaners into bracelets. The boys made superhero wristcuffs, attaching the mat with pipe cleaners around their wrists.
This is a really good fine motor, quiet activity for preschool and up.
