It is always great to take young children for walks around the neighbourhood, to a local park or ravine. These walks can turn into “teachable” moments. Spring walks are a good time to observe what is happening in nature. Here are some ideas for discussion:
- buds on trees and shrubs that become leaves
- birds nests in trees with eggs in them
- tulips and daffodils that are blossoming
- brown lawns that are turning nice and green with the warmer weather and rain
- worms on the sidewalk after the rain
- ducks that are returning back from the winter away
- squirrels and chipmunks coming out of hibernation
You can have the children collect small dandelions or wild flowers, interesting twigs or rocks to decorate your house or classroom.
