Some bone conduction implants use a bracket, which is a screw that protrudes above the skin. But BONEBRIDGE is different: it is implanted under the skin and uses a magnet to hold it in place. Cochlear implant magnetic resonance imaging

The magnetic implant attracts an adjustable intensity magnetic basal plate (connected to the processor). The processor transmits the sound vibrations through the skin to the bone, where the cochlea perceives the sound.

Magnetic resonance surgical steel

After MED-EL, other brands have opted to offer users the possibility of an MRI with their cochlear implant, but it is important that you check before choosing one implant or another. Remember that a cochlear implant system consists of two parts: an external audio processor, placed comfortably behind the ear, and an internal cochlear implant, which is placed subcutaneously by surgery and which is the one that must be compatible with the MRI. The external cochlear implant, which can only be removed surgically, should be compatible with this technology.

MRIs use powerful magnets to create detailed images of the inside of a person’s body. For cochlear implant users, MRI safety* is especially important, as each cochlear implant has an internal magnet that can be affected during an MRI.

Titanium implants magnetic resonance imaging

Many people will never need to have an MRI scan, and if you have a cochlear implant, there may be other diagnostic tools available to use. In fact, 85% of radiology professionals agree that they have an alternative diagnostic tool for those who cannot undergo MRI scans because they have a device or implant with a magnet.2

If you must undergo an MRI scan of the head, the presence of the cochlear implant magnet will distort the MR scan image of any given power. Regardless of which brand of implant you have, MRI scans of the brain usually require removal of the magnet.

You can remove and replace the implant magnet with a medical procedure if necessary. In the unlikely event that you or your child needs repeated MRI scans, there is a magnet-free option.

For higher strength MRIs or to reduce the shadow zone, the magnet can be temporarily removed with a medical procedure. The sound processor must be removed for all MRIs.
