Benefits of the Panama Railroad
The railroad is part of a wide range of land transportation around the world that, as a whole, allows the transport of people and goods from the place where they are to the place where they want to go or where they are needed. Road, air, sea and rail transport services have different characteristics that reflect advantages and disadvantages according to the particular situation of the operation.
The reality is that rail transport is an intermodal system that, with very specific exceptions, needs road. And freight transshipments, the so-called friction costs, are very expensive. In fact, they can represent between 25% and 40% of the total cost of rail transport.
How important was the railroad in everyday life?
It was a complex work where the bridge over the Almendares River stands out, in which 200 stone pillars imported from the U.S.A. were used. The American Benjamin Wright was hired to direct the work, but he could not take charge of the works because he fell ill. He was replaced by Alfredo Cruger, also American, who worked together with two of Wright’s sons. The French engineer Julio Sagebién played an important role.
The rolling stock was built in England and Havana. The locomotives were built by John Braithwaite. They arrived at the port of Havana on April 28, 1837 and were named Cubana, Havana, Villanueva and La Comisión. Four other machines were acquired from the Reanis company and arrived on February 23, 1838. They were named Herrera, Escovedo, Villa Urrutia and Cruger. The 50 freight cars, with a capacity of up to 50 tons, were built in Havana and were completed with eight passenger cars, from twenty-four to twenty-six seats. Subsequently, two locomotives were acquired from the Mathias W. Baldwin factory in Philadelphia (USA), which were named Cruger and Colón.
Panama Railroad today
A railroad is said to have been used in the construction of the Royal French Army fortress at Louisburg, Nova Scotia, in 1720.  Between 1762 and 1764, at the end of the French and Indian War, British Army engineers built a gravity railroad (mechanized tramway) (Montresor’s Tramway) that ascended the steep terrain of the Niagara River bank at the Niagara Portage (which the local Senecas called the “Crawl on All Fours”) in Lewiston, New York. The railroad was built in 1762 and 1764. The railroad was built in 1762.
The state governments granted charters creating the business corporation and granting a limited right of eminent domain, which allowed the railroad to purchase the necessary land, even if the landowner objected.[Note 1] In 1835 the B&O completed the B&O’s first project.
In 1835 the B&O completed a branch line from Baltimore south to Washington, D.C. Boston & Providence Railroad was incorporated in 1831 to build a railroad between Boston, Massachusetts and Providence, Rhode Island; the road was completed in 1835 with the completion of the Canton Viaduct in Canton, Massachusetts.
Who worked in the construction of the Panama Railroad?
At the end of the 18th century, the Englishman James Watt invented the first steam engine, which significantly accelerated the slow material progress of mankind. Taking advantage of the mechanical advances of the textile industry and the massification of steel production, in 1804 the Englishman Richard Trevithick invented the first locomotive engine on rails.
The American Civil War in the mid-nineteenth century (or Civil War), was a great incentive for the development of railroads, as it was the first modern war in the world, due to the use of railroads for strategic and tactical purposes, although during the time of the war the pace of construction of railroads decreased, once the war was over it generated an unusual boom in the installation of rails and new routes.
The construction of railroads in the USA was always carried out by private enterprise with the support of the states and the federal government, awarding land adjacent to the railroads and granting soft loans.
