Augmentative and alternative communication
Communication systems, strategies and tools that replace or complement a person’s natural speech are known as augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). These tools help people who have difficulties with oral communication.
There are many reasons why a person may not be able to communicate through speech. It may stem from a developmental disability that has affected speech development. It may result from an acquired disorder that has affected their ability to speak.
Communicating without speech function can be frustrating for many people. Both the person who cannot speak and the speaker may become confused and frustrated that messages are not being conveyed effectively. Often, a person who is unable to speak has many ideas that he or she would like to share, yet finds it impossible to express. When a person cannot speak, they often receive judgments about their competence, their potential, and their ability to think and learn. Someone who cannot speak quickly learns that some things are easy to express (e.g., picking up the TV remote control to suggest that you want to change the channel) and other things are difficult (e.g., when the TV program reminds you of a family member who has passed away).

Communication between people is one of the main activities of the human being, since it allows his social and intellectual development and it is an activity of vital importance for the essential development of each person.
Augmentative and alternative communication systems vary according to the characteristics and interests of the person and his/her environment. They may be based on manual gestures, sets of pictures or pictograms, text, electronic equipment with voice output, and combinations of all of these. Unlike speech, these elements are not spontaneously available to people with cerebral palsy.
Therefore, their implementation will require the use of many specific resources such as the training of all the people in the person’s environment (professionals, family, friends, society in general) in their use, the availability of the necessary technical resources for their development, the creation of specific materials for the communication and learning needs of each individual, and specific and organized user training on this subject. The importance that communication occupies in the lives of all people more than justifies this necessary over-effort.
Alternative communication examples
They are instruments of expression based on images that have the purpose of increasing (supporting speech) or compensating (as an alternative to oral language) communication and language deficits. They support the relationship and interaction with others, allow to express opinions, feelings, represent routines and alternatives, cope with the challenges of everyday life.
It is not a replacement of natural speech, but a complement to it, helping the person to achieve higher levels of communication with the environment and, thus, greater autonomy to function in the environment.
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders (DSM V, 2013) that involve three distinct areas of clinical interest: difficulties in social interaction, communication, restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests or activities (Frith, 2003; Wing, 2012).
