Noise-cancelling headphones

There are several ways to avoid annoying ambient noise, or at least to minimize it to the point where it is no longer perceptible to the vast majority of users, which we can classify into active and passive technologies.

If we want to go a step further and eliminate outside noise as much as possible, we must opt for what are known as active noise cancellation or ANC (Active Noise Control) systems. What do they consist of? They are based on the theory of wave interference.

Thanks to this feature it is theoretically possible to create an artificial sound wave that, when added to the original wave, results in the total or partial cancellation of part of it, which is known as destructive wave interference.

So, for example, it usually works very well if we have a low frequency noise and constant type such as that produced by the engine of an airplane, a car, even the hum of the fans of a computer. In fact, there are headphones that incorporate predefined listening modes for each of these situations, such as the ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint.

Noise cancellation in calls

More than four decades later, noise on airplanes is still a problem. During 2018, online travel agency Agoda, asked more than 10,000 global travelers what they thought were the most annoying travel habits; noisy passengers were the top aversion.

Fortunately, today’s travelers have something that those of 1978 didn’t: a selection of the best noise-reducing headphones for travel. While these can’t help with crowded overhead compartments or rude passengers kicking your seat, we present four irritating problems that occur on air travel for which these hearing aids are ideal below:

However, there are some conversations you shouldn’t ignore. For example, when the pilot or a flight attendant is talking, you should pay attention. You can do this easily with the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, which feature 11 levels of noise reduction, including a “talk mode” that you can use to pause the noise reduction when you need to. Similarly, the QuietComfort 20 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones have an “Aware” mode that you can activate at the touch of a button to hear what’s going on around you.

Noise-isolating headphones for sleeping

The previous leader on this list was Sony’s WH-1000XM3s, and the WH-1000XM4s have everything that made those headphones sensational, plus a little more for the same price. That alone should be all you need to know to get an XM4.

One of its best features is the ability to switch from ANC mode to transparency mode with just a click of the physical buttons on the headphones. In fact, the customization of the 85t’s controls is so good, you can assign a function to any series of clicks, on any of the headphones.

Why should you buy them? If you’re an Apple fan, the AirPods Max offer excellent audio quality and top-tier noise cancellation with all the ease-of-use and convenience benefits of traditional AirPods.

Apple’s AirPods Max are stunningly beautiful headphones with excellent ANC. The weight-distributing mesh headband, and some of the most intuitive controls we’ve ever used, are truly exceptional. Whatever we say about the quality of the build materials is little to say, surpassing other high quality wireless headphone options.

Cheap noise cancelling headphones

One thing to keep in mind is that currently, noise cancelling headphones can only actively cancel low frequency sound. Because high-frequency sound has a shorter wavelength than low-frequency sound, canceling this sound would require the localization devices to be closer to the listener’s eardrum than is currently possible, or require complex digital algorithms too advanced for current headphone electronics. Therefore, most noise-cancelling headphones incorporate some degree of soundproofing to help counteract high-frequency sound (such as a whistle or squeak).

Yes. However, not all frequencies can be effectively canceled, and noise-canceling headphones generally only work within a certain decibel range. A noise that is very loud, or occurs at a very high frequency, will still be heard through the headphones, even when the noise cancellation feature is in use.
