Advantages and disadvantages of welding

Welding is a system involving the elements of a system, i.e., labor, materials, machines, environment and written media. Assembly work is often performed in an industrial environment, but can be performed in many different locations, including outdoors, underwater and in space.

Regardless of the location, welding is still hazardous and precautions must be taken to avoid burns, electric shock, poisonous fumes and overexposure to ultraviolet light.

The main advantage of welding in general is that it allows the repair of elements that otherwise would have to be discarded and replaced by a new one, as is the case of metallic structures that, if they present breaks or cracks, can be welded, obtaining a high level of resistance and durability under different types of stresses, extending the life of the structures.

The great disadvantage is that for high precision works the cost is very high, since it requires a high degree of technical experience on the part of the welder, due to the fact that the final product must be free of pores and imperfections.

Welding applications

The electric arc causes the melting of the base metal and the filler metal, achieving a transfer of molten metal through the so-called plasma column, which is nothing more than an ionized atmosphere caused by part of the surrounding air and gases from the melting of the slag elements of the electrode itself.

They are made up of a transformer, to subsequently pass the current through an electrical element called diode and thus modifying the AC mains current into DC / DC working current, separating the polarity and choosing, at will, its connection.

It is a type of basic electrode, high quality, contains a high content of manganese which makes it excellent for all those welding applications subjected to high resistance and dynamic loads, and where a deposited material of high performance of the welded assembly is required.

It is a type of electrode of Universal use, of excellent weldability, suitable for generic works, in carbon steels of any thickness, metallic carpentry, locksmithery, boilermaking, etc.

Advantages of welding

The old standby is a round pumice pan. A welding frame and tripod allow you to heat the part to be welded on top or from below. Kiln bricks and charcoal blocks are not very large and you will need something heat resistant to place the weld block on, otherwise you will continue to set your workbench on fire. Ceramic tiles or a couple of pieces of sheet metal, large enough to provide a safety margin in case the torch flame wanders away from the weld block. Don’t forget a fire extinguisher. Under no circumstances use asbestos products for welding.

Types of welding

The arc welding process is one of the most widely used welding processes and encompasses several techniques. One of these techniques is stick metal arc welding (SMAW), also known as coated metal arc welding, stick welding or manual metal arc welding.

It is a technique in which the welding heat is generated by an electric arc between the work piece (base metal) and a consumable metal electrode (filler metal) coated with chemical materials in a suitable composition (flux).    We can visualize the process in the following figure:

The filler metal: as it melts, it forms droplets that are deposited on the work piece giving rise to the weld puddle, which fills the weld space and joins the pieces together in what is called a weld joint.

Flux: melts together with the filler metal to form a gas and a slag layer, which protects the arc and the weld puddle. The flux cleans the metal surface, supplies some alloying elements to the weld, protects the molten metal against oxidation and stabilizes the arc. The slag is removed after solidification.
