The use of ear trumpets or ear trumpets for those with partial hearing loss dates back to the 17th century. By the end of the 18th century, their use was becoming more and more widespread. Collapsible conical ear trumpets were produced on demand for specific customers. Among the most widespread or well-known models were the Townsend trumpet (built by the auditory educator John Townshend), the Reynolds cornet (specially made for the painter Joshua Reynolds) and the Daubeney cornet.

Age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) is hearing loss that occurs gradually in most people as they age. It is one of the most common disorders affecting older and elderly adults.
Age-related hearing loss usually occurs in both ears, affecting them equally. Because the loss is gradual, people with this type of hearing loss do not always realize that their ability to hear has been reduced.
There are many factors that can contribute to age-related hearing loss. It can be difficult to differentiate age-related hearing loss from hearing loss that may occur for other reasons, such as being exposed to noise for a long time.
Medical problems such as high blood pressure or diabetes, which are more common in older people, may contribute to hearing loss. Medications that are toxic to the sensory cells in the ears (for example, some chemotherapy drugs) can also cause hearing loss.
