What do the seals on foodstuffs mean?

Black octagons abound on packaged products in Mexico. But what is the purpose of the new labeling on food and non-alcoholic beverages? What does it mean and how should the new seals be displayed?

On October 1, 2020, changes to the Mexican Official Standard NOM 051 on labeling for prepackaged food and non-alcoholic beverages, whether manufactured domestically or abroad, that are marketed in the country came into effect.

In addition to providing information to protect the consumer, the objective of the modified NOM 051 is the implementation of a front warning labeling, which was approved by the Mexican Congress in 2019 as part of the amendments to the General Health Law on overweight, obesity and labeling of food and non-alcoholic beverages.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) considered that the labeling approved by Mexico is one of the best in the world for its clarity, simplicity and information on excess nutrients that contribute to overweight and obesity.

General Resolution 41/2020 of the Provincial Tax Administration of 09/18/2020 approved the procedure for the determination of the taxable base of the stamp tax, in real estate lease agreements as from the enactment of National Law No. 27551, published in the National Official Gazette on 06/30/2020.

The Real Estate Reference Value (VIR) is a value established with the purpose of making real estate transactions transparent, avoiding the possibility of under-invoicing and consequent evasion in the amounts corresponding to the Stamp Tax.

The VIR must be consulted in cases of transfers of ownership of real estate and/or instruments granting possession at the date of celebration of such acts, being taxed on the higher value resulting from comparing it with the amount of the transaction and the tax valuation.
