The proposal to allow polyandry was included in a green paper (a government document that anyone interested can study and make suggestions on, especially before legislation is amended or new legislation is created) by South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs, which is intended to make marriage more inclusive.
As part of the push to strengthen marriage policy, the department consulted with traditional leaders, as well as human rights activists and other groups, on the key issues.advertisement
Officials found that people had widely differing views on marriage, but one of the proposals put forward is to develop a “gender-neutral” marriage scheme.
Later in the paper, officials said that “while some stakeholders believed in the practice of polygamy, there were also those who opposed it. This applies equally to the practice of polyandry. Ironically, the stakeholders who believed in the practice of polygamy were opposed to the practice of polyandry.”
Country where a man can have several wives
This is usually due to the fact that the property registration is in the name of one man: the father, the husband or the brother. In case of separation or divorce, the man usually retains the rights to the property or land, while the woman is left homeless or has to share the property with her in-laws, without gaining dominion or rights over it. Discriminatory property, land and housing laws and the lack of control over them also result in women being marginalized from community decision-making processes led by men, who are the usual landowners. In rural communities, land ownership determines both social status and the manner in which control over household resources and income is exercised. Women’s disadvantaged economic position in this regard generates a structural dependence on men for access to resources, which in turn can expose them to insecurity and violence.

If Berlin is responsible for your asylum procedure, the State Office for Refugee Affairs (LAF) will accommodate you in a reception center. This is an accommodation where many asylum seekers live and are cared for together. If there are not enough places, emergency accommodation is also used. The housing conditions can be very cramped and you are obliged to live in the initial reception center for at least six weeks and up to a maximum of six months. The obligation to live in an initial reception center can be waived if you are seriously ill, threatened with violence or have other compelling reasons to move.
If you come from a “safe country of origin” (currently Ghana, Senegal, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo and all EU Member States), you will normally have to stay in the first reception center for the duration of the asylum procedure and in case your application is rejected until you leave the country.
