How is the United Nations helping Africa?

What Africa is like

The African continent has demonstrated a strong commitment to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment. Almost all African countries have ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, and more than half have already ratified the African Union’s Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa. Other milestones include the African Union’s declaration of 2010-2020 as the African Women’s Decade.

The increasing integration of gender issues into national planning and budgets is based, in part, on our strategies to institutionalize these processes, to train national officials to implement them, and to strengthen the capacity of women’s movements to advocate for and monitor them.

Expanding the possibilities for women’s participation in peace processes involves training women mediators and advocating that gender equality measures are crucial to security policies and practices. We also work to improve the essential services offered to women in conflict and post-conflict areas.

Africa’s current situation 2021

In 2019, rich countries spent just 0.3% of their gross national income on official development assistance, with only five countries (Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and the United Kingdom) meeting or exceeding the 0.7% target.

The briefing note also highlights that a significant proportion of aid does not meet internationally set standards for aid effectiveness. For example, aid is often used to further the national or commercial interests of donor countries. In 2016, donors awarded 51% of aid contracts reported to the OECD to companies in their own countries, and only 7% of suppliers were from low- and middle-income countries.

The fortune of the world’s richest man ($185.6 billion in October 2020) is greater than the sum of all international aid budgets ($152.8 billion in 2019). On the other hand, governments spend more than twice as much on subsidizing fossil fuels ($320 billion in 2019).

In emergencies, the UN Refugee Agency is prepared to act within 72 hours. Once the population is safe, durable solutions are sought so that refugees and displaced persons can return to a normal life.

Hunger and food insecurity are currently the biggest problems in African camps, affecting thousands of refugees who have had to flee their homes to escape wars and conflicts that lead to extreme violence against civilians.

We do this by working to foster social cohesion at the local level and reduce the incidence of sexual and gender-based violence, empowering displaced women in the DRC at the socio-economic level.

We provide Somali, Eritrean, Sudanese and South Sudanese refugees living in Ethiopia with shock food treatments and nutritional products to combat malnutrition. In addition, we provide training to refugees to enable them to take control of their own health and that of other members of their community, thus contributing to the establishment of self-sustaining structures and systems.

Together, the EU institutions and member countries are the world’s largest donors of development aid and cooperation.
