The University of California at Berkeley had several satellites in other cities such as Davis and La Joya, where aspects related to agriculture and citrus, a very important economic activity at that time, were studied. In addition, a School of Medicine had been created in the city of San Francisco itself.
This awareness of the need to have a University in Los Angeles was driven mainly by Edward Dickson, who had studied at Berkeley and who at the time was the political editor of the Los Angeles Express newspaper. Dickson succeeded in being appointed to a seat on the Board of Regents of the University of California at Berkeley in 1913. Berkeley’s rejection of the idea of a University in Los Angeles was considerable. But finally at the end of 1917 it was possible to open an Extension of the University of California, as it was called, in Los Angeles. Courses in business law and modern languages were taught at this Extension.
Finally, in 1919 the Governor of the State of California, William Stephens, signed the decree creating the University of California at Los Angeles, better known by its acronym UCLA. The first facilities were housed in various buildings on Vermont Avenue before moving to its final location in Westwood, where it remains to this day.

Family obligations present another challenge for Hispanic students. A 2014 National Journal survey found that two-thirds of Hispanic women and men who sought full-time work or joined the military after completing high school expressed doing so to financially help their loved ones. In comparison, only 39% of white women and men who did not attend college said the same.
However, many schools classify undocumented students as “aliens,” which removes their ability to be eligible for federal financial aid and reduced in-state tuition rates.
Read our Guide for Undocumented Students in Higher Education to learn more about the various resources available to help this population pursue higher education.
Students in the U.S. must be classified as permanent residents before they can receive financial aid. Most immigrants obtain permanent residency by applying for a Green Card, but current laws stipulate that undocumented citizens cannot do that; instead, they must leave the U.S. and apply for permanent residency from the consulate of their home country.

Regional accreditation, on the other hand, is the standard recognized by most traditional colleges and universities and is therefore more widely accepted. National and regional accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, but regional accreditation facilitates the transfer of college credit to other regionally accredited institutions.
National accreditation is generally used by colleges and universities that want their students to begin their careers as quickly as possible. These include technical, vocational, correspondence, and religious schools. Nationally accredited transfer credits are not widely recognized by regionally accredited colleges and universities.
Before applying to an online college or university, it is essential that students find out if the online school has been properly accredited. Since accredited schools must meet rigorous standards to maintain accreditation, students enrolled in these programs can be assured of a high-quality education.
