The St. Louis, San Francisco & Texas Railroad (acronym AAR SLSF) was a subsidiary of the St. Louis-San Francisco (Frisco) Railroad that operated 256 km of railroad in Texas. Frisco’s network, with that of its Texas subsidiary, formed a large X in the states of Kansas , Missouri , Missouri , Oklahoma , Texas , Arkansas , Mississippi and Alabama . It merged with the SLSF in early 1964. The Frisco in turn merged with the Burlington Northern Railroad (BN) in 1980.

Two other railroads, the Blackwell, Enid and Texas Railway , operating between Red River and Vernon, Texas , and the Oklahoma City and Texas Railroad , operating between Red River and Quanah , were acquired by the Frisco , respectively.June 30, 1904 and July 25, 1904.

In actuality, the SLSF & T network consisted of four discontinuous segments extending over several Frisco lines from Red River . SLSF & T owned 167 km of main lines and operated over 87 km of additional lines through rights-of-way and leases. The 14.5 km it owned between Red River and Quanah, in turn, were leased to Quanah, Acme and Pacific Railway . In 1930, Frisco acquired the Gulf, Texas and Western Railway , whose 172 km of track connected Seymour, Texas (southwest of Wichita Falls ) with Mineral Wells (west of Fort Worth ). This company was later leased to SLSF & T, which operated the line until Frisco abandoned it in 1939.

It is not the fracking itself that causes the earthquakes, but the injection of wastewater into the wells. The Texas Railroad Commission, which regulates oil activities, had to impose new rules on water disposal.

Last week, Rhyne again requested a hearing from the Railroad Commission, as he has since 2016, in the face of new requests to drill water disposal wells in his region, as he fears an earthquake could end up affecting one of the world’s largest natural pools fed by surging springs, very close to his home in Balmorhea Nature Park, Toyahvale.

The Texas Parks Department declined to answer AFP’s questions, but press officer Stephanie Salinas Garcia acknowledged “the concern that earthquakes could affect the spring system”.

A century ago, the United States was a world leader in railroad deployment and use. A confluence of factors led to great growth in the U.S. railroad industry during the 19th century. The development of the steam engine powered train made the trains necessary. Also, the industrial revolution and relative explosion in manufacturing necessitated movement of raw materials and finished products. The fledgling railroads were in competition with past canals like the Erie Canal for the very lucrative business of transporting markets. However, railroads were far more efficient than canals for the reason of transportation and also dominated the landscape.
