You cannot use Azure DNS to purchase a domain name. For an annual fee, you can purchase a domain name using App Service domains or a third-party domain name registrar. Domains can then be hosted in Azure DNS for record management. For more information, see Delegating a domain to Azure DNS.

Azure DNS DNS domains are hosted on Azure’s global network of DNS name servers. Azure DNS uses proximity broadcast networks. The closest available DNS server answers each DNS query to provide better performance and high availability for the domain.

Azure DNS does not currently support DNSSEC. In most cases, the need for DNSSEC can be systematically reduced by using HTTPS/TLS in your applications. If DNSSEC is a fundamental requirement for your DNS zones, you can host these zones at third-party DNS hosting providers.

Azure DNS can manage DNS records for Azure services and also provides domain name service for external resources. Azure DNS is

As this quick start is for quick testing purposes only, it is not necessary to configure Azure DNS name servers at a domain name registrar. With a real production domain, you will typically want all Internet users to be able to resolve the hostname to connect to the server or web application. You will visit your domain name registrar to replace the name server records with Azure DNS name servers. For more information, see Tutorial: Domain Hosting in Azure DNS.

When you no longer need the resources you created in this quick start, remove them by deleting the MyResourceGroup resource group. Open the MyResourceGroup resource group and select Delete resource group.

Azure DNS Private Zones is a service focused on resolving domain names in a private network. With Private Zones, customers can use their own custom domain names instead of the Azure-provided names currently available.

The Domain Name System, or DNS, is responsible for translating (or resolving) a service name to its IP address. A hosting service for DNS domains, Azure DNS provides name resolution using Microsoft Azure infrastructure. In addition to supporting Internet-facing DNS domains, Azure DNS now also supports private DNS domains.

Users on the local network and different Azure virtual networks must be able to connect to the most optimal servers on an internal network to access the required content. This ensures that the application is always available, the cost is optimized and the user experience is good. Azure private traffic management (PTM) is the primary requirement here. Azure PTM ensures that user DNS queries are resolved to an appropriate private IP address on the application server.
