Although the abbey was besieged by Henry VIII during the dissolution of the monasteries in 1534 and closed in 1540, until 1550 it became a cathedral and was saved from destruction thanks to its royal connections.
The abbey returned to the Benedictines under the reign of Queen Mary, who died in 1558 during the reign of Elizabeth I and was subsequently buried in the same abbey. In 1579, Elizabeth I herself recovered it, converting it into the collegiate church of St. Peter.
Since the coronation of William the Conqueror in 1066, all English monarchs have been crowned in the abbey, with the exception of Matilda I, Edward V, Joan I and Edward VIII, who were never enthroned.
The Archbishop of Canterbury is in charge of performing the coronation ceremony. St. Edward’s Chair, the throne on which the sovereigns sit at the coronation, is preserved inside the abbey.
Henry IV of England died in the Abbot of Westminster’s house in the Jerusalem Chamber on March 20, 1413. Not much is known about the cause of his death, other than that the monarch suffered from an ailment that disfigured his skin, and that he suffered severe attacks of some disease.
