Camulodunum is the Latin form of a British place name known to Pliny the Elder and cited by Tacitus. The Roman power established a castrum there. The Brittonic word, the language still spoken in the IX th century in Essex and East Anglia [ref. necessary] , is written Cair colun , ie the strong city or cair on the Colne. In the X th century , Old English gives Colneceaster or Colencaster . This name, which also designates a municipality, is written Colecestra in the Domesday Book in 1086.

Scholars have proposed that the first British Latinized name means Camulus Fortress, Camulus being a warrior god related to Mars. But the prefix etymon dunum or “sacred hill or fortress” seems better to designate the slow-moving river channeling into the harbor, i.e., the Colne today.
