Caravan weight

When the Maximum Authorized Mass of a motorhome is less than 3500 Kg, the B driving license is sufficient. However, in those cases in which the MMA is higher than 3500 Kg, it is necessary to obtain a C type license.

This legislation applies to both caravans and motorhomes. That is to say, in the case of caravans, the total weight of the towing vehicle plus the trailer may not exceed 3500 kg in order to be able to drive the whole with a type B license.

Otherwise, the driver must obtain a B96 license. And in the event that the M.M.A of the car and the trailer together exceeds 4250 kg, the driving license required is a B+E type.

In order to be able to drive a total M.M.A. (car plus caravan) of more than 4250 Kg, the driver is required to have a B+E caravan driving license, in addition to the presentation of the psycho-technical certificate of aptitude, he/she must take three different practical tests: a specific test, a maneuvering test and a driving test.

To change the ownership of the vehicle, the first thing the buyer and seller must do is to sign a contract of sale and purchase. Then, the new owner of the caravan must first go to the Tax Office of his Autonomous Community (if it has transferred the competences), where he has to provide a copy of the original documentation of the caravan, a copy of the contract of sale and a copy of his ID card, in order to pay the Transfer Tax (Impuesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales). Subsequently, you will have to go to the Provincial Traffic Headquarters of your province to make the transfer of ownership, where you must again provide the original and a copy of the above documents.

In both cases it is the buyer who must pay the expenses corresponding to the Tax of Matriculation, or the one of Patrimonial Transmissions, as well as the rates that the Provincial Headquarters of Traffic charges for this type of managements.

Secondly, the purchase contract in triplicate (for the seller, for the buyer, for the paperwork), be careful with the date of the purchase contract because if you take too long to do the paperwork it expires and you have to start again (I think it is 15 days or 1 month), you will need photocopies of the caravan papers (with ITV already passed), buyer and seller ID, document of being exempt from paying mechanical traction tax (I think it is called that or circulation tax), well with all these documents you have to go to the tax office, fill out the form and pay there, you pay 4% of the value that is reflected in the contract of sale (as the issue of caravans do not have it priced I put in the contract that cost me 1000 euros and paid only 40 euros, this is a common practice “allowed”).

And is that, while light caravans (less than 750 kg of MMA) insurance is an extension of car insurance and its price can range between 0 and 30 euros, heavy caravans (over 750 kg of MMA) with own registration have an insurance with a price of between 30 and 90 euros if it is third party.

The annual parking for a caravan can be around, for example, 250 euros (20.84 euros/month) on average in the Valencian Community. However, this price will vary depending on the province, as well as whether we prefer covered or uncovered parking.

This test consists of two phases. On the one hand, a series of maneuvers in a closed circuit and the coupling and uncoupling of the vehicle, as well as a circulation test on open roads to evaluate the driver’s dexterity.

Depending on the place where you live, in the same way that happens with cars, the cost of the ITV of a caravan varies. For example, in Valencia, passing the ITV of a caravan costs around 35 euros.
