Apex Shark Expeditions and Chris Fallows have been featured in many shark documentaries on the natural history channels, with Apex being the first choice for virtually any serious shark documentary in South Africa.

In 2000, producer Jeff Kurr of Discovery’s Shark Week, traveled to South Africa hoping to be the first to capture the incredible hunting techniques of the great white sharks that inhabit Seal Island, False Bay.

The stakes increased with each visit because the team was armed with new HD technology. The team used the Phantom camera, a high-speed camera that shoots at 2,000 frames per second, to capture every detail of a shark’s leap from the water, among many other gadgets and gizmos.

The first helicopter breach, night feeding and mass feeding of a whale carcass were filmed. During the filming of the whale carcass, the unforgettable scene of Dr. Rocky Strong sitting on top of the carcass while the great white sharks fed beside him was a moment that many remember.

The report shows that 77% of oceanic shark and ray species now fall into the “endangered” category according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List criteria.

Simon Fraser University professor Nicholas Dulvy, PhD, explained that the study shows that despite the fact that most species are moving further from land, oceanic rays and sharks are at “exceptionally high risk of extinction, much higher than, for example, a bird, mammal or frog species”.

Longer-lived and later-maturing species initially declined at a faster rate than species with shorter generation cycles, but two of these particularly vulnerable species (the white shark – Carcharodon carcharias and the porbeagle – Lamna nasus) have shown signs of recovery at the regional level since the early 2000s, largely due to the introduction of fishing restrictions.

The mention of the animal is still frightening and very unpopular. A ruthless person in business is often referred to as a “shark”. However, beyond the mythical image of the shark, the reality is very different.

Always on the lookout for prey that will have little chance of escaping their vigilance, leaving them behind or resisting their impressive jaws, sharks are reputed to be the fiercest marine animals and man’s “best enemy”.

The image of the super predator has haunted us for centuries. Both the movies and the media are there to terrify even the most marine of us. The reality is not so cartoonish. These fish, much less dangerous than we think, are no less fascinating.
