On July 25, 2004, native angler Maxwell Mashandure, caught an 8.2 kg monster weighing 69 cm in length and 62 cm in girth, biting on a 6-inch Junebug-colored vinyl stickbait. As the specimen caught at Manyame Dam, Darwendale, was recorded hours after it was caught, it could have weighed in at around 20 lbs had it been weighed freshly caught. That fish eclipsed the previous records of – 7,295 kg weighing 67cm in length and 56cm in girth, caught by Namo Mkondo on July 5, 1998 also at Manyame Dam and – 7,995kg with a length of 67cm and a girth of 54.5cm by Danyal Patel caught with a buzzbait on August 8, 2001 at Gungwa Weiren, a private lake in the Lowveld.

Although there are bass populations in Kenya, Namibia, Malawi, Botswana and Mozambique (see dams in South Africa), most of the destinations of interest are centered in South Africa (where the S.A.B.A.A. South African Bass Chapter Federation holds its competitions) and the record fish usually come from Zimbabwean waters.  These relatively young Florida basses have an incredibly high growth rate, according to several ichthyologists. The question is whether these animals will live long enough to break the current world bass record.

Crankbaits fall into the category of power fishing lures, due to the amount of distance you can cover with them in a short period of time. This is a significant advantage for anglers looking to locate and fish quickly, such as tournament anglers for example.

The characteristics of the paleton is what determines how deep a crankbait dives. Crankbaits are divided by ranges of diving depths and work best when they run in the depth range for which they are rated.

So there can be a gray area between crankbait classes. For example, the Strike King KVD Magnum Squarebill is rated to dive three to seven feet deep. So is it a shallow-diving crankbait or a medium-diving crankbait?

Shallow-diving crankbaits are ideal for fishing shorelines that have gradual slopes. They are the best crankbait for docks, fallen trees and other structures that are generally found in shallow water.
