In ancient times, when society was made up of groups of individuals who were nomadic, diseases or health problems were considered celestial or divine punishments and therefore healers, priests, sorcerers, magicians and mystics used to be the ones who practiced dentistry invoking and elevating their therapeutic procedures to superior entities directly linked to the gods. It is precisely because of all this symbolism that surrounded and involved the art of healing that patients for a long time assumed a distant position from doctors and dentists, accepting the treatment without questioning it1.

Since the beginning of dentistry as a healing art and then as a modern science, professional errors in dentistry could be differentiated into errors and accidents in anesthesia, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, expertise and lack of hygiene measures or biosafety standards. Detailed classification that divided the occurrences of errors as follows: (a) in terms of the type of culpable and non-culpable; by omitting rules or scientific standards or simply by lack of vocation, voluntary, gross and serious errors that make up the figure of guilt that is focused within the sphere of criminal law; (b) in terms of the origin by the economic issue that is outlined within the scope of civil law); by the lack of ethics or moral contemplated within the guild through the code of ethics 1-3.

Dentists, like other health professionals, take an oath to comply with all necessary procedures in order to ensure quality service.  They also take an oath to avoid complications or injuries to their patients. Unfortunately, many of them fail to live up to these vows when doing their jobs. An oversight, a distraction, or doing things in haste, could cause serious health problems for the patient. Making it necessary to receive additional treatments and procedures that cost money, time and discomfort. This type of negligence can even be fatal and is known as dental malpractice.
