Yellowstone national geographic

2. Old FaithfulOld Faithful Geyser is one of the park’s most famous geysers, named for its frequent and somewhat predictable eruptions. There is seating, ample parking and a ranger station that monitors the time, height and length of one eruption to predict the next and inform visitors.

The best time to visit Yellowstone National Park is between May and September. During this season, the snow melts, making hiking, swimming and wildlife viewing more comfortable, and during the winter, the park attracts snow sports enthusiasts. Most of it is dry powder snow, so it is epic for downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.

By PlaneThe Yellowstone Airport (WYS) is the closest airport to the park, and is located just over a mile north of West Yellowstone, Montana. Between June and September there are regular flights from Salt Lake City. Most tourists pick up a rental car at the airport for easy access to the park.

West Yellowstone is the closest community to Yellowstone National Park. The west entrance is less than a mile’s drive from the heart of the city. This proximity makes West Yellowstone one of the most popular base camps for exploring the park.

Yellowstone, the nation’s first national park, encompasses a staggering 2.2 million acres and its own ecosystem. Visitors coming from the west entrance meet Madison Junction and Firehole Canyon. Car tourists can take Firehole Canyon Drive for spectacular views of the lava flows and a fun place to swim (no lifeguards on duty).

South of Madison Junction, other major Yellowstone attractions such as Grand Prismatic, Old Faithful, and Upper Geyser Basin are a short drive away. To the north, steaming landscapes like Steamboat Geyser and Artists’ Paintpots surround the Norris Geyser Basin. All of these incredible landscapes are home to many of Yellowstone’s best hiking trails.

What to see in yellowstone

This park is so big, it is hard to describe the feeling of being there. Just as an idea, from the south entrance of the park to the northeast, it’s a 3.5 to 4 hour drive on paved roads, it’s huge! And most of the park is little visited. Most of the tourists are in specific areas or do the drive only.

The best advice I can give you, if you visit Yellowstone, is to do everything early in the morning. Wake up at dawn, 5am or 6am maximum and do the most touristy parts first, before the thousands and thousands of tourists arrive (the buses start arriving at about 10:00) because it can be unbearable. One of the days we were there, we wanted to drive from south to north at 1pm and got stuck in traffic for about 2 hours:

When you go through Yellowstone, take a zoom lens or binoculars, because you are sure to see animals everywhere. Mostly bison, but you will also see deer, elk, many types of birds, coyotes, and if you are lucky (or unlucky…) bears and wolves.

Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

After a 1.5 hour drive north through Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, you’ll stop to pick up your fishing license on the way to Lewis Lake (you can get one in advance at the Jackson Visitor Center, or at any of the Yellowstone National Park ranger stations).

Native trout will be returned alive to the water, but you may keep any lake trout or brown trout you catch.  The guides will try to be on their way back by 16:00 to be in Jackson by 18:00. However, departure and return times can be flexible. What’s Included
